How to store Siirt pistachios

A few simple rules to keep your pistachios as fresh and tasty as the day they arrived.

How to store Siirt pistachios

Pistachios are a nut with a high natural oil content. That oil gives them their soft flavour, but if they are stored in the wrong conditions, contact with air, heat and moisture can make them go rancid over time. With a few simple rules you can keep your pistachios tasting fresh for months.

1. A cool, dry and dark place

Heat and sunlight speed up the breakdown of oils. Keep your pistachios in a cupboard away from sunlight and heat sources such as the hob, oven and radiators.

2. An airtight container

Once the pack is opened, transfer the pistachios to a tightly sealed glass jar. Reducing contact with air preserves both freshness and crunch. Pistachios easily absorb surrounding smells, so do not store them next to strong-smelling foods such as spices.

3. Keep away from moisture

Moisture is the pistachio's greatest enemy. Damp pistachios go soft and can turn mouldy. Do not use a wet spoon, and do not let condensation form when you take the jar out of the fridge.

4. Long-term storage: fridge and freezer

If you will eat them within a few weeks, room conditions are fine. For longer storage, the fridge or freezer is the best option; pistachios regain their flavour shortly after leaving the freezer.

5. Raw and closed-shell pistachios last longer

Unroasted and especially closed-shell pistachios keep longer than roasted ones. If you want to stock up, choose closed-shell raw pistachios and roast as much as you need.

When not to eat them

Do not eat pistachios that smell bitter or rancid, show mould or discolouration, or have gone soft. These are signs they have not been stored properly.

We prepare the pistachios from our own orchards fresh to order; all that is left for you is to store them well.
